Phibsboro Picture House, 1914-1953

The Phibsboro Picture House (376 North Circular Road, Phibsboro, Dublin 7) was opened in May 1914. Designed in a Neo-classical style by the architect Aubrey V O’Rourke.

In the late 1940’s it was bought over by Odeon Ltd and renamed the ‘Phibsboro Cinema’. When the cinema opened first it housed 300 seats, upon closing it had capacity for up to 600 seats.

The cinema closed in January 1953 with screenings or ‘Battle of Powder River’ and ‘Katie Did it’. To make way for a new cinema it was demolished to make way for the brand new State Cinema, which opened in 1954.

This site has now been acquired in order to build a new housing development.
