Stella, 1923-2004

When it first opened its doors on 29th January, 1923, the Stella in Rathmines, seated 1,823, making it the largest cinema in Ireland at the time.

The cinema was designed by the firm Higginbotham & Stafford as luxurious art deco picture house, with it’s large auditorium, balcony and a ballroom on the first floor.

Like so many other cinemas of the time, it functioned as a space for live music, hosting such musicians as the Boomtown Rats and Elvis Costello.

During the 1980’s the auditorium was divided into two screens and the original cinema’s facade was covered up, it operated like this until it closed in 2004.
